Dr. Anthony Amend is a Professor in the Pacific Biosciences Research Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa, where he directs the Integrated Center for Environmental Microbiomes and Human Health, an NIH-designated Center of Biomedical Research Excellence, and serves as an executive editor of the journal Mycologia (the flagship journal of the Mycological Society of America. He is the author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, work that has been cited over 5,000 times, and has led more than $25 million in competitive research grants from the NIH, NSF, and other national funders.
His research and consulting focus on detecting, identifying, and quantifying fungi using DNA sequencing, culturing, and microscopy, the science at the heart of mold and indoor-air disputes. He is retained solely to provide independent scientific opinions based on the evidence; his opinions follow the science wherever it leads.

Identifying and measuring fungi in buildings, HVAC systems, and personal property — distinguishing normal ecology from actionable conditions.
Molecular, species-level identification and community analysis that goes well beyond standard spore-trap counts.
Quantitative and comparative interpretation of cultures and microscopy to characterize contamination.
Assessment and interpretation of indoor air and environmental microbiology data in occupied buildings.
Evaluating whether sampling protocols, laboratory methods, and chain of custody support the conclusions drawn.
Tracing contamination to its source and assessing what the evidence can — and cannot — establish.
Personal-injury claims alleging health effects from indoor mold exposure.
Building-envelope failures, moisture, and resulting fungal growth.
Disputes over mold conditions and the adequacy of remediation.
Interpreting sampling data and the scientific basis for coverage positions.
Alleged failure to disclose mold or moisture conditions in a sale.
Materials and systems implicated in fungal contamination.
